Doctor Sued For Wrong Site Surgery

Doctor Sued For Wrong Site Surgery

CNN News reports that a woman has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against a Yale area hospital asserting that the surgeon removed the wrong body part, then tried to cover it up. Wrong site surgeries are sometimes referred to as "never events", because such errors are so egregious that they should "never" happen. However, unfortunately, they happen more often than patients suspect. In this instance, the woman was admitted to the hospital for surgery to remove a precancerous lesion on her sixth rib. However, the doctor removed part of her seventh rib instead, requiring her to under a second surgery.

According to reports, the hospital claims that it acknowledged its error, apologized to the patient, and immediately reported the incident to the Department of Health. Representatives of the patient state that she never received such apology and instead avoided telling the complete story, stating that he "had not removed enough rib" and thus needed a second surgery that day. The family notes, "Making the patient undergo another surgery the same day, without owning up to the real medical reason for the repeat surgery is just plain deceitful."

The medical malpractice lawsuit seeks compensation for medical expense, pain and suffering and other damages.
