Do you know the signs of cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy is one of the more common birth injuries. Although in many instances the fact that your child has suffered harm and has a birth injury is immediately evident, other times parents are not aware that their children have this condition until time has passed, in some situations as many as 3 to 5 years later.

Cerebral palsy may affect muscle tone, fine and gross motor skills, coordination, balance and posture. Additionally, those affected by cerebral palsy may have feeding challenges, such as diffuculties swallowing and chewing, and may also suffer from learning disabilities. Clues that may lead to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy include that your child has not reached certain developmental milestones. This may be apparent at doctors' visits - such as well checks where a physician evaluates your child's physical and neurogical development. Delays in rolling over, sitting, crawling and walking may be signals that a birth injury has occurred. Other signs inlcude poor muscle tone, early hand preference development and unusual posture. In order for your child to have the best chance to minimize the effect of this condition and improve the effectiveness of therapy, an early diagnosis is crucial.
