Garden Grove Hospital Fined For Death Following Child Birth

According to reports, the California Department of Health has fined Garden Grove Hospital $75,000 for jeopardizing patient safety in a way likely to cause serious injury or death. The fine was in response to the 2014 death of a young woman from China who hemorrhaged after giving birth. The woman had undergone a Cesarean section, then began to bleed heavily. An investigation by the state medical board determined that systemic practices lead to the failure to prevent and treat post-partum hemorrhaging. This incident also lead to a jury awarding the family $2 million as a result of the obstetrician’s negligence. The California Medical Board has also filed an accusation of gross negligence against the obstetrician based on the woman’s death, as well as a second patient from China who died while awaiting surgery following a vaginal delivery.

Statistics reveal that less than two percent of doctors are responsible for roughly half of all medical malpractice claims - underscoring the need to vigorously fight to stop these doctors from causing further harm via filing medical malpractice lawsuits when harm occurs, reporting bad actors to medical licensing boards, and researching your doctor before receiving treatment.

Most of the doctors who commit repeated medical errors continue to practice and treat patients. As San Diego medical malpractice lawyers, we strongly believe there is a need for more attention to be placed on identifying these dangerous doctors who account for multiple malpractice claims and reducing their negative impact on the safety of patients.
