Is your hospital safe?

Is your hospital safe?

Preventable medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for more than 200,000 deaths each year. This figure doesn’t include the additional hundreds of thousands of mistakes that result in catastrophic injuries to patients.

Some of the more common errors include prescription errors (including giving the wrong types of medication or dosage errors), wrong site surgeries, and the failure to diagnose and treat medical conditions (such as cancers or heart attacks) in a timely manner.

Studies have shown that the prevalence of errors and mistakes may depend on where you go for treatment. A recent study by the nonprofit Leapfrog group graded California hospitals from A – F based on various safety criteria. The best hospitals from a safety perspective included:

  • Barton Memorial Hospital
  • Centinela Hospital Medical Center
  • Encino Hospital Medical Center
  • French Hospital Medical Center
  • Glendale Adventist Medical Center

The worse offenders included:

  • Downey Regional Medical Center
  • El Centro Regional Medical Center
  • Memorial Hospital of Gardena
  • Olympia Medical Center
  • Victor Valley Global Medical Center
