Children who suffer birth injuries may require a lifetime of care

In a recent birth injury lawsuit, a 6-year-old girl and her family were awarded just over $40 million. The child suffered a spinal cord injury during the delivery, and the family asserted that the obstetrician who performed the delivery lacked the necessary experience and training to do so. The family also alleged that the physician was negligent and/or reckless in his approach. At the end of the trial, the jury agreed with the family, and awarded the significant damage award. Of this amount, $30 million will go toward future medical care and therapy.

Unfortunately, when birth injuries occur – whether brain damage, spinal cord damage or a brachial plexus injury, the effects may last a lifetime, and the injured party will require therapy throughout his or her lifetime. The costs of medical care and therapy may be insurmountable. By filing a medical malpractice suit, injured parties and their families may be able to obtain compensation from the responsible parties and be able to pay for the care a loved one needs and deserves.
