Medical Malpractice Suit Alleges Dirty Needle Caused Nerve Injury

Travis Barkley, drummer for the band Blink 182 has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit. The case asserts that a Santa Monica medical center was negligent in causing him to contract sepsis and nerve damage following an MRI.

He asserts that he was stuck numerous times – in excess of 40 or more – with a dirty needle when the technician was unable to find a vein. As a result of being stuck, he developed sepsis.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), “HAIs affect 5 to 10 percent of hospitalized patients in the U.S. per year.” They further note “Approximately 1.7 million HAIs occur in U.S. hospitals each year, resulting in 99,000 deaths and an estimated $20 billion in healthcare costs.”

Where a hospital or medical center, or their staff, fail to properly sterilize or take other actions to properly avoid infections, they may be held responsible for a medical malpractice action. Damages may include medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
