Surgical errors are a leading cause of medical malpractice

While most doctor and hospital visits occur without complication, the possibilities for harm occurring due to medical negligence are endless. Harm may be the result of medical errors during labor and delivery, or as the result of a delay in diagnosis from a family practitioner, or due to a prescription mix-up – whether prescribing the wrong medication or a dosage error.

However, a recent study found that surgical mistakes are one of the leading causes of medical malpractice claims. In fact, surgical errors are the second most commonly cited reason behind malpractice claims, after diagnostic errors. Surgical malpractice includes mistakes such as wrong site surgeries, leaving behind surgical instruments, and failure to properly sterilize equipment – leading to infections. Further, the study concluded that the overwhelming source of surgical negligence was doctor performance during the surgery. Faulty pre-op care and poor/incomplete advice given prior to undergoing surgery also contributed to medical negligence claims.

The report finds the top surgical specialties leading to claims include general surgery (22%), orthopedic surgery (17%) and neurosurgery (8%).

Doctor visits are intended to help you heal or prevent future illness – unfortunately when mistakes are made, the patient may be left with permanent, catastrophic harm.
